FAIRR Initiative
Established by the Jeremy Coller Foundation in 2015, the FAIRR Initiative (FAIRR) is a collaborative investor network that raises awareness of the material risks and opportunities in the global food sector. The mission is to build a global network of investors who are aware of the issues linked to intensive animal production and seek to minimise the risks within the broader food system. With over 400 members globally, representing over US$90 trillion in combined assets, they are the world’s fastest-growing investor network.
FAIRR focuses their efforts on providing high quality Research, facilitating collaborative Engagements and coordinating Policy action for their members. They make sure they do the heavy lifting for investors, so that they can focus on exercising their influence, as responsible stewards of capital, while safeguarding the long-term value of their investment portfolios.
So far, they have conducted several collaborative investor engagements on seafood sustainability and have had a significant impact on the seafood sector’s transformation.
In March 2023, FAIRR launched a collaborative investor engagement initiative with UNEP FI, WWF, Planet Tracker and the World Benchmarking Alliance. This collaborative investor engagement aimed to put various seafood finance resources existing in the market to action by encouraging major seafood companies to develop and implement robust, full-chain traceability systems as a means of identifying and addressing key environmental and social risks.
And in 2024, the FAIRR Seafood Traceability Engagement was conducted. This was a joint initiative by 35 institutional investors calling for enhanced traceability for seven major global seafood companies. The total investment by these investors amounted to USD 6.5 trillion, or approximately JPY 1,000 trillion.
Furthermore, they have engaged with seven of the largest salmon producers to reduce their reliance on fishmeal and fish oil(FMFO), mitigate their wider biodiversity risks and identify potential opportunities to adopt novel feed ingredients that can replace FMFO, such as algal oil between 2020 and 2025.
・Sustainable Aquaculture Engagement
Thus, FAIRR is an international investor network that continues to drive transformation in seafood sustainability through the power of investment.
