Global Seafood Sustainability Initiative (GSSI)
It is said that there are now more than 140 seafood eco-labels in the world. As consumers have more choices, the reliability of each certification is also being questioned. This is where the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) came into being.
GSSI checks many certification schemes against the FAO guidelines "Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries." As of July 2021, there are nine schemes approved by GSSI. In addition to the familiar MSC and ASC certification, these also include GLOBALG.AP and BAP*7.
GSSI serves as a global benchmark tool for promoting sustainable seafood. For example, GSSI-approved certification has been incorporated into the "Sustainable Sourcing Code" for the Tokyo Olympics and into the procurement policies of many seafood-related companies. When retail distributors plan their sustainable seafood commitments, they set percentage targets based on GSSI-approved certified seafood. It is used as an important indicator for promoting sustainable seafood procurement both domestically and overseas.
