GLOSSARY OF SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD

Global Fishing Watch

Global Fishing Watch is a fishing app that uses the latest technology such as machine learning and satellite technology toIUU FishingIt is an organization that develops maps and analytical tools that are effective in eradicating sea ice and properly managing fisheries resources. It was jointly established in 2015 by Oceana, an international marine conservation organization, SkyTruth, a company that uses satellite images and data to protect the environment, and Google*1, and became independent as an international NPO in 2017.

We have developed maps and analysis tools, such as those introduced below, and are making them available free of charge on our website.

Map for transparency of fishing vessel activities (click here

This map shows when, where and how fishing vessels from which countries are fishing.
The positions and movements of fishing vessels are recorded by AIS (Automatic Identification System) and by information provided by each country.Vessel Monitoring System (VMS)The data is based on the data from the National Fisheries Agency (NFA) and the Fisheries and Fisheries Policy Research Center (FISA). The fishing vessel data is taken from a list of fishing vessel names and unique vessel identifiers that have been registered in advance. Satellite images are also used to observe the details of fishing vessel activities.

Global Fishing Watch map. You can see the activity period and fishing hours of the fishing boats (center of the screen, 1,321 hours). Green and orange indicate fishing locations.

Maps for managing marine protected areas (Marine Manager Portal

This map visualizes the status of marine protected areas around the world using AIS, estimated fishing effort, fishing vessel activity, marine environmental data, etc. It is used for marine protected area management and marine spatial planning.

From Marine Manager Portal. You can see the seawater temperature (orange) around the Galapagos Marine Protected Area and the operation status of fishing boats (47,488 huors in the center). Green indicates the fishing locations.

Management and monitoring of transshipment at sea (Career Vessel Portal)

Transshipment at sea is considered to be a place where illegally caught fishery products, drugs, weapons transfer, human trafficking, etc. are likely to occur. This map allows you to track transshipping vessels and check their activities. You can see the departure location and date, contact time with other transshipping vessels, etc. *Membership registration required to view

In addition to developing these maps, we also collaborate with machine learning experts and the scientific community to create new datasets, write papers, and promote the use of the data we create.

Also, in 2020, the reality of Chinese fishing boats operating illegally in North Korean waters was exposed (the largest in the world at the time).click hereThe research is published in the National Research and Development Agency of Japan.Fisheries Education and Research Organizationis also cooperating.
