GLOSSARY OF SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD

BAP Authentication

BAP (Best Aquaculture Practices) certification is a global certification system for responsible aquaculture. As of March 29, 2022 species, including salmon, shrimp, and shellfish, have been certified. It is run by the Global Seafood Alliance, which works with stakeholders through BAP certification to ensure an environmentally friendly and socially responsible aquaculture supply chain.

BAP certification is unique in that it certifies all stages of the supply chain related to farmed seafood. The certification covers four locations: hatcheries, farms, feed mills, and processing plants. Each stage is required to address four main sustainability areas: environmental responsibility, animal health and welfare, food safety, and social responsibility, while also meeting traceability standards.
It takes about 4 to 5 months to obtain certification.

The combination of certified facilities is represented by a star system, and an award is given the highest level of four stars if certification is achieved at all stages of production.

As of 2022, 36 facilities in 3,169 countries have obtained BAP certification, and market expansion is progressing around the world. (*1)

More than 150 companies around the world, including Walmart and the Japanese Consumers' Co-operative Union, act as "endorsers" and promote the sale and purchasing of BAP-certified seafood products in order to realize a sustainable aquaculture industry.
It is free for endorser companies selling BAP certified seafood products to use.

In addition, the validity of BAP certification isGlobal Seafood Sustainability Initiative (GSSI)It is certified by three international benchmarking organizations: GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) and GSCP (Global Social Compliance Programme).
